Vancouver Clinic II

A 92,800 square-foot, two-story medical office building for Vancouver Clinic in Vancouver, Washington.

Stearns partnered with KPFF Structural Engineers to assist with the design development and frame construction encompassing the metal floor, roof deck, metal stairs, and brace frames for lateral resistance. One of the unique features of the project is the distinctive barreled high-roof that spans 260 feet in length, above the second floor. The roof was originally designed with radius beams positioned along the width of the roof. Stearns proposed limiting the amount of radius beams by positioning one beam every 27 feet and utilizing an open-web joist design as infill - a suggestion that brought significant savings to the budget.

Mark Schneider, Project Manager of The Neenan Company, stated, “R.F. Stearns has demonstrated the ability to perform under an extremely demanding schedule. The front end of the project was successfully maintained primarily through the extra efforts of Stearns. I take great pleasure in commending the folks at R.F. Stearns. From beginning to end, the process was executed by dedicated professionals at every step of the way.”

In addition to performing the steel frame scope for the project, other distinctive areas that Stearns was involved in were the mechanical trellises, which house the mechanical units located on the roof, the curved architectural exposed channel staircases, and the second-floor bridge over the open atrium area.

Jim Sarka, Project Manager of R.F. Stearns, explained, “The most important items for the project were servicing our client and meeting their schedule and budget. This fast-track project was challenging from a coordination standpoint with incorporating the steel supporting elements in the architectural features of the building. We met the important items and challenges through close coordination with our in-house staff and project team to bring the project in on time and within budget.”

Additionally, Stearns accelerated the availability of normal long-lead items, saving weeks to the construction schedule.
