Stearns furnished the structural steel, light-gauge framing, open-web joist, metal deck, and miscellaneous steel for this 70,000 sq.ft. addition to an existing structure designed to replicate a ship. Threatened by cost and schedule overruns, Stearns was approached to assist the Engineer-of-Record with systems selection and design. The mechanical mezzanine represents the bridge of a ship with operable smoke stacks, the entry canopy is shaped to replicate the bow of a ship, and exterior walls are tilted 10 degrees from vertical and clad in a metal panel to imitate the ship’s hull. Stearns’ contributions helped to bring the project to completion within budget.
