Campbell's Stockpot

Faced with a fast-track schedule for the new two-story, 220,000 square-foot Culinary Campus for Campbell's Stockpot Soup, General Contractor, Panattoni Construction turned to Stearns for their expertise in design-build structural steel systems.

Through close coordination with Shutler Engineers and Panattoni Construction, Stearns was brought on board to assist with the completion of the design, perform the steel scope of work, and execute a fast-track schedule. Stearns furnished and installed the structural steel frame, steel joists, metal floor and roof deck, and miscellaneous steel. A unique challenge overcome by Stearns' in-house engineering staff was the element of complexity in designing the open-web joists for concentrated loads at unknown locations on the roof.

James Sarka, Stearns' Project Manager stated,

"This was a very complicated open-web project due to the extensive mechanical systems supported by the joists, which were finalized just in time. Our relationship with open-web suppliers, the ability of our staff to detail the open-web joists in house, and to manage the entire steel process, were the contributing factors that led to meeting the owner's schedule expectations."

Central Computer

The State of Oregon's Central Computer Facility consolidates 12 satellite facilities into one location.  A fast-track, design-build project, the structure was designed, permitted, and built in just 12 months.  The facility meets State Energy Efficient design and U.S. Green Building Council LEED Silver requirements.   The Central Computer Facility was designed and constructed to meet Tier III Data Center classification for reliability, serviceability and availability, and requires a secure site with mechanical and electrical redundancy.

Faced with a tight budget and schedule, Stearns was hired to recommend the most efficient and economical structural steel system, assist with design, procurement, and fabrication, and to provide a critical path schedule. At the recommendation of Stearns, SmartBeam castellated steel technology was used to meet the building’s requirements for strength and spanning capabilities. This further allowed Stearns to provide early procurement to meet schedule demands. The use of SmartBeam created additional design options and proved to be a cost-effective, time-saving alternative to conventional open-web and structural steel systems.

Central Plant

This 81,000 sq.ft. utility plant heats and cools more than 5.5 million sq.ft. of office space in the Capitol and 22 other state buildings in downtown Sacramento. The plant’s features include cooling towers to release heat pulled from state buildings and a 140-foot tall, 4.25 million gallon, thermal energy storage tank for reserves of chilled water during off-peak energy demand times. The plant uses solar panels to provide energy for the offices in the building. Stearns managed the entire structural steel package from procurement, detailing, and fabrication to erection.

Due to previous successful project experience, Stearns was awarded this much anticipated 354,192 sq.ft., steel-framed data center located in Prineville, Oregon. Stearns provided design assistance, procured materials, developed fabrication and erection drawings, and managed the entire steel construction schedule for this mission critical project. Stearns’ continued involvement with data center projects is a testament to their strength in providing efficient structural steel systems, cost-saving design solutions, fabrication, and critical path scheduling. Due to the successful completion of Confidential Data Center 1, Stearns was awarded this second state-of-the-art, 354,192 sq. ft. data center for the same client. Stearns moved the start date up 3 weeks, from mid-December to late November, in order to complete the first half of the shell prior to the holiday season and allow follow-up crews protection from the winter weather.

Immunex

Immunex Corporation is a state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical company that develops, manufacturers, and markets therapeutic products for the treatment of cancer, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders.

The project consisted of a 50,000 square-foot, 3-story process development facility. Stearns was brought on board at the recommendation of DPR Construction to assist the Engineer-of-Record with appropriate structural steel systems selection, design development, framing optimization, and stringent vibration criteria, which brought the project to completion on time and within budget.

Integrated Devices Technology

When Integrated Devices Technology decided to build their fabrication facility and office in Hillsboro, they had 12 months to make it operational. Stearns was hired in late August to produce a structural design that could be procured, detailed and fabricated to facilitate steel erection starting in mid October, just seven weeks later! Stearns, over the course of two days, developed a framing scheme using components that met both the design and schedule requirements. The Engineer-of-Record, VLMK Engineers, agreed with Stearns’ system, comprised of open-web, wide flange and structural truss components, and advised IDT to contract with Stearns to provide and install the proposed steel systems. The complex structures were delivered by Stearns on-budget, while achieving the very aggressive schedule required.

LSI Logic

When LSI Logic decided to make Gresham their new home, the construction schedule required steel to be designed, detailed, ordered and fabricated concurrently. Stearns, along with KPFF Consulting Engineers, were chosen to work with Rinne and Peterson Engineers and DPR Construction to design and construct the long-span superstructure on this basis, while controlling cost and quality.

Matsushita Semiconductor

Stearns was hired by the owner as a prime contractor to provide the structural design and to furnish and install the structural steel, metal deck, and stairs. The Matsushita Semiconductor Fabrication Plant had to demonstrate excellent floor performance due to the heavy and vibration-sensitive equipment for this 265,000 sq.ft, 3-level structure. In order to achieve the project requirements, Stearns designed and constructed the long-span, ballroom-truss roof and floor systems using SmartBeam. Superior vibration performance and significant cost savings were attained while maintaining an aggressive construction schedule.

Recology

A part of Portland's sustainable and environmentally conscious approach, efforts are being made to reduce the amount of waste entering landfills.  The Suttle Road Recovery Facility, owned and operated by solid waste management company Recology, serves as a transfer station for food waste on its way to be composted.  Stearns supplied the steel for a brand new pre-engineered office building, as well as two pre-engineered additions to the existing facility.

T5 Data Center Hillsboro

Working from developing design documents, Stearns was tasked to commence steel erection on this mission critical project 11 weeks after notification to proceed. Our role included design-assist, sourcing and securing material, structural steel detailing with our in-house crew, and furnishing and installing the structural steel, buckling restrained braces, and roof deck for this 65,500 square foot data center. Total erection time from start to substantial completion was three weeks. We are erecting the structure with our own crews.

Wachovia Call Center

This was not only a fast-track project; it was cloaked in a high degree of confidentiality. Stearns was brought on board to provide an efficient and economical structural steel system and to furnish and install the entire steel package for this 77,500 sq.ft. high performance call center. The floor plan is divided into three bays, two of which provide space for 500 customer service agents. The third bay houses training and conference rooms that feature a glazed clerestory that floods the space with natural light. A raised floor houses the web of telecom cabling. The main corridor in the center bay, dubbed "Main Street," utilizes painted exposed roof decking to give the building a modern aesthetic. Stearns' critical path scheduling capabilities provided the owner with an operational state-of-the-art call center within five months.
