Cancer Research Center

Located next to the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine, this five-story, state-of-the-art glass and steel structure, is one of only 65 research facilities in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute and will serve as an important hub for cancer research both in the islands and globally. Stearns worked alongside a development team of elite members of Hawaii’s construction industry in building this stunning 150,000 sq. ft. structure which was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification thanks to its many environmentally-friendly and sustainable features.

CF Tigard Elementary

The 72,000 sq.ft. elementary school included demolition of the existing 82-year-old building to make way for the new state-of-the-art facility. Stearns’ cost-effective structural design assistance and value-engineering are credited with providing innovative solutions to potential cost overruns and scheduling delays. Stearns proposed an alternate method of allowing certain critical elements to proceed before concluding a conventional bidding process. This allowed for an aggressive steel schedule to meet the project’s strict budgetary guidelines. Stearns design-build approach was a key factor in bringing the project to successful completion two months early.

Ewa Makai Middle School

This is the first project for the Department of Education in Hawaii to receive LEED Silver Certification.  Stearns was brought on board early to furnish and install the structural steel package, produce erection drawings, facilitate fabrication, and achieve an accelerated schedule.  The school consists of classrooms, computer labs, wood shop, an athletic department, cafeteria, meeting and counseling spaces, and administration.  The school was constructed on 18.5 acres on West Oahu.

Knik Elementary

A new 55,000 square foot, steel-framed school for Knik Goose Bay Elementary was built to accommodate the continuing growth of the Kink-Fairview community.  A construction team of experts were chosen to manage the fast-track schedule expectations of less than one-year duration; typical school construction can take up to two years to complete.

Stearns was approached by UNIT Company to supply the structural steel and miscellaneous elements and manage and coordinate logistical issues to ensure materials were delivered to the site at the required time.

Liberty High School

Stearns was initially hired by the Owner’s representative to provide preliminary budgets from conceptual designs for the structural steel components for this state-of-the-art high school. Stearns’ role evolved into design consultation and management of the complete Division 5 package while providing updated budgets through the design and construction stages. Upon completion, over one million dollars in Division 5 scope savings was realized by the owner through this collaborative, Design-Assist arrangement.

This 5-story, 88,000 sq. ft. facility received LEED Gold certification for its strict use of nontoxic, recyclable materials, air circulation zones and a rooftop garden with outdoor seating. At the recommendation of R & H Construction, Stearns assisted the Engineer-of-record with design development, sustainable systems selection and procurement. Stearns worked with the construction team to provide fabrication and an aggressive steel construction schedule.
