This 280,000 sq.ft. terminal is part of HNL's extensive modernization program. Stearns is erecting the design-build frame-supported membrane hangar structures, in addition to furnishing and installing the structural steel, open-web joists, and metal floor and roof deck of the remaining structures.

29 Palms Marine Base

Stearns furnished and installed the entire structural steel package for this 31,000 sq.ft. dining hall for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. The dining facility was designed to serve 2,000 to 2,200 Marines over a 2 - 2.5 hour meal period 3 times per day. A separate carryout space to handle an additional 500 Marines has been provided with its own distinct entrance and exit.

Camp Withycombe Armory

Working in close collaboration with the Engineer-of-Record and the Construction Team, Stearns designed, furnished and installed the structural steel package for this state-of-the-art 250,000 sq.ft., steel framed training center for the National Guard and Reserve soldiers. The center includes administrative offices, classrooms and storage areas. The project is part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process, which closed some military sites and consolidated others. Ten Oregon National Guard and Eight Army Reserve units will use the center.

C-17 Fuel Cell Nose Dock, Hickam Air Force Base

This design-build, 30,000 square foot hangar was constructed to house and provide maintenance and repair to the forward section of the C-17 aircraft, located at Hickam Air Force Base in Oahu, Hawaii. The roof structure was built using 204’-0 long-span structural steel trusses and open web roof joists.

Evergreen Aviation

When Evergreen Aviation purchased the Spruce Goose and barged it from Long Beach, California to Oregon, they needed to give it a new home. A big new home.

Stearns was hired early in the design phase to assist KPFF Consulting Engineers in the completion of the structural design. Our emphasis was on erection stability and safety, deflections and tolerances, panelization and connection design - all critical to successfully complete the 360 foot truss system. Stearns worked closely with Hoffman to construct the steel on-time and on-budget.

Hawaii Regional Security Operations Center

This two-story 312,275 sq.ft, design-build facility includes a Visitors Control Center, Warehouse, Antenna Farm and Inspection buildings, and many other supporting structures. This project utilized both interoperability and BIM (Building Information Modeling) to advance an aggressive 36-month design/build schedule. Through the use of BIM the structural team worked together utilizing many of the same electronic files. This enabled the “mill order” of structural steel to occur only 3 months after notice to proceed. As the structural design package advanced ahead of other disciplines, final coordination was essential. Building Information Models were developed to assist with “clash detection” between the various services and the structural frame.

Tramco Hangar

Designed and constructed by Stearns, this 330,000 sq.ft., four-bay, Boeing 747 hangar features 50-ton telescoping platforms and spans measuring 250 by 750 feet.
