Stearns furnished and installed the structural steel, metal floor and roof deck, stairs, and railings for this 4-story office building in Berkeley. The unique lateral system in this high seismic region consisted of buckling restrained braces in combination with special concentric steel brace frames. To transfer forces to the foundation, brace frame columns where connected to anchorages with 7" diameter pins, creating both erection stability and construction tolerance challenges. A coordinated and collaborative effort on the part of all team members in properly placing the anchor bolts, checking and maintaining tight fabrication tolerances, and pre-assembling components prior to shipping, resulted in safe and flawless erection. This project also featured a precast skin system supported by connections successfully integrated into the structural frame.
